A train station in Carlisle has been given an exciting new DIY makeover in preparation for the filming of a new television advert.  The station's bridge has received a stripy-coloured makeover, while one of the platforms has been transformed with turquoise paint, purple wallpaper and lampshades hanging from the ceiling.

A builder from Yorkshire has been jailed for four years after conning homeowners out of tens of thousands of pounds.

Darryl Glynn from Selby managed to get customers to hand over £54,990 for work that was left undone, leading to rain-damaged houses that had to be vacated and bills of at least £34,000 to fix.

Lucky staff at B&Q could share £12million under a new bonus scheme that is designed to boost profits for the DIY firm.

The 33,000 workers could pocket over £600 a year if their store meets targets set by management.

B&Q boss Euan Sutherland said: "We want to grow the business. We've got a plan but the workforce has a huge part to play.

"We hope this will mean they are really motivated to do everything in their power to help us succeed."

A survey from npower hometeam has shown that 1 in 3 women don't like inviting tradesmen into their homes. One of the women polled complained that she walked into her bedroom to find a builder rifling through her underwear drawer, whilst another watched as her fireplace was smashed to pieces.

As "hilarious" as these anecdotes are, you've got to ask how helpful some of these polls are. The poll goes on to state that "an incredible 86%" want tradesmen to turn up on time - what about the other 14%?

Council contractors paid over £20k in bonuses

In a report from the Sunday Times, it has been disclosed that contractors working for local councils have been paid in excess of £20,000 in the 2007-2008 tax year. Under a Freedom of Information Act request, it came to light that one plumber, working for Kirlees council in West Yorkshire, was feeling flush after bagging a £22,000 bonus on top of his his £20,000 salary.

The council defended the payouts stressing that bonuses were only paid out on work that was done on time - and there was me thinking that this was all part of the job...

A recent survey carried out in Watford has found that 32% of people see tradesmen as being in the profession that provides the best work life balance.

Personal trainers came first in the list (41%) whereas 27% of the people surveyed thought that teachers have the best balance in their lives.

The insurance firm Norwich Union Risk Services is today warning that tradesmen cannot rely on property owners and managers to ensure that asbestos is properly dealt with in areas where they work.

The news comes after the Asbestos the hidden killer campaign enters into its fifth month. The campaign was set up by the National Health and Safety Executive to warn people of the dangers of the substance.

Tradesmen are costing London’s workforce up to 13 million working hours every year according to a recent survey by Aspect Maintenance.

Nearly a third of the 996 Londoners polled revealed that they had to take time off of work to wait at home for an engineer, with almost half losing six or more hours of their time waiting at home for tradesmen.

Builders, gasfitters and other tradesmen have an “alarming” ignorance of the risks posed by asbestos, with 20 dying each week, a report revealed today.

The British Lung Foundation said a survey of 400 workers showed that only one in eight knew that exposure to asbestos could be fatal.

One in 10 of those questioned revealed they had been pressured to continue working even if they suspected that asbestos was present, while one in four mistake
