To change or not to change? What electrical work can I do in my home?

I know this is old news to electricians, but to anyone else planning to do odd DIY electrical jobs in the home, you should be aware of the electrical regulations put in place by the Building Regulations for England & Wales Jan 2005.
In the simplest format, the regulations states there are certain basic electrics you can do in your home, and more often than not, ones you can’t. The latter requires a qualified electrician. It can be a little confusing for those not in the know therefore to find out exactly what lies in which category, I advise people to get in contact with their local authority’s Building Control Department.
Not one to leave people hanging on such an unsure note, I’ve done some searching myself and found the following handy links which explain this new regulation in more detail:
• A useful article by the City of Westminster Council: Home Electrical Safety
• Business Eye a free, impartial information service for Wales has an article tilted New Rules on Electrical Work in the Home - 5 Jan 2005
• Department for Communities and Local Government – New Rules for electrical safety in the home.
• Mark Brinkley, author of Housebuilder's Bible, speaks about undertaking electrical work in the home.
And remember if you are in any doubt at all about your competence in electrics or the things you can and cannot do, call in a qualified electrician to help. To find a local reliable electrician in your area click here.
