Shocking new figures have revealed that there are 210,000 out-of-work builders in the UK applying for just 300 building jobs.
These figures, released by the Liberal Democrats, demonstrate the extent to which the building industry has been affected by the economic downturn and the huge gulf that has opened up between the number of jobseekers and posts available.
According to recent figures, a total of 2,702 companies went bust in 2008, a 40% rise on the previous year.
Lib Dem communities spokeswoman Julia Goldsworthy said: "This Government has done little to help the construction industry in recent years.
"Gordon Brown bailed out the banks but seems to have forgotten about the small businesses that have been hard hit in this sector.
"We don't yet know the situation for last year and 2010 could paint an even bleaker picture."
