Cowboy builder jailed for 4 years

A builder from Yorkshire has been jailed for four years after conning homeowners out of tens of thousands of pounds.

Darryl Glynn from Selby managed to get customers to hand over £54,990 for work that was left undone, leading to rain-damaged houses that had to be vacated and bills of at least £34,000 to fix.

Profits fall for Travis Perkins by 11%

Travis Perkins, the owner of DIY superstore Wickes, has revealed that it has seen an 11% drop in profits.

The builders' merchant had been hit by the slowdown in the housing market, with profits for 2009 down to £180m from £202.5m in 2008. The company has warned that trading conditions are still fragile and they are said to be "the most difficult in the group's history".

The latest survey by Rightmove has revealed that asking prices for homes have jumped by an average of 3.2% in the last month.

In reality this 3.2% rise equates to £7,000 and is said to be a result of the short supply of properties in popular areas like London.

A safety warning has been issued about foil insulation by the Austrailian government, following a nationwide energy-saving plan.

The insulation programme saw tens of thousands of Austrailian homes fitted with foil insulation which has since been linked to a series of deaths by electrocution. The programme was a central part of Kevin Rudd's environmental strategy, offering homeowners a way of saving energy.
