A host of big name stores have announced some high-profile discounts for this bank holiday weekend.

The weekend, which is is the last public holiday before Christmas, is vitally important for retailers who are still struggling in the recession.

B&Q, the DIY giant, is giving a 15% discount to customers who spend more than £50 in stores between Friday and Monday.

A band of plumbers from company Pimilico Plumbers has won BBC One's TV talent show Tonight's the Night.

The band, known as 'Never Mind the Ballcocks', will now have their CD sold in Plumb Centres and Part Centres across the UK. The band consists of heating engineer Stuart Dunne (lead vocals and guitar), Martin Botley (lead guitar), heating engineer Robbie Glanfield (bass guitar and backup vocals) and Billy Kikidis (drums).

House prices to take 5 years to return to 2007

New research from the National Housing Federation (NHF) has predicted that house prices will not return to their pre-slump levels until around 2014.

Despite many lenders reporting a stabilisation in prices, the NHF predicts that overall house prices will fall by 12.2% this year with next year seeing a further 4.6% drop.
