Homeowners in Sanford are doing their own bit to for the environment by giving their street a heating makeover. Frustrated by large energy bills, residents of the Sanford Housing Co-op in East London have installed an array of eco friendly measures which are expected to cut their carbon emissions by up to 60%.

Their ageing heating systems have been replaced by a combination of solar thermal and biomass boilers to meet their hot water and heating needs. Heat-recovery ventilation units for the co-operative's bathrooms and kitchens will retrieve as much as 85% of heat from air drawn out of its building to heat new air being brought into it. Improved loft and cavity wall insulation and natural ventilation have also been introduced with the help of project managers J3 Building Futures.

All of these measures mean that Sanford Walk will be the first street kitted out with green technologies in the UK to exceed the governments 2050 carbon reduction targets.  On top of this, the experience is said to have brought a unique sense of community to the area, as well as reducing rent and improving living conditions. It seems like a win-win situation to me!
