Hints & Tips

Q. When I take a shower the water leaks downstairs through the floor to the ceiling below. How do I get this remedied and how much should it cost?

A.  There are a few possible causes.

The most likely cause is that the seal on the shower tray against the wall isn’t doing its job. Applying a liberal application of silicone sealant around the edge of the tray may be all you need, but be sure to clean out the any sealant that is there already and allow it to dry.

Another cause could be that the shower tray has been fitted badly or is cracked.

Material:

This is one of the first things you will need to consider before even looking at shapes or sizes. There are basically two main options – cast iron or acrylic. The former can be cold to the touch, hard to keep clean, expensive, incredibly heavy, and the colour is often faded by sunlight or harsh cleaning materials. The latter, if poorly made, can be unstable, noisy and scratch easily.

With British bathrooms getting smaller by the second, Julie Holliday, Brand Manager for Shades, reveals some clever ways to make the most of every spare inch of available space.

Once conceived as a pure utility space, functionally kitted out for one’s daily ablutions, the bathroom is now raising its profile in the home and being recognised as a ‘living’ area in its own right. However, the average family bathroom is now a paltry 2m x 2m – ensuring it truly lives up to its ‘smallest room in the house’ moniker.
