Tradesmen warned about asbestos by insurers

The insurance firm Norwich Union Risk Services is today warning that tradesmen cannot rely on property owners and managers to ensure that asbestos is properly dealt with in areas where they work.

The news comes after the Asbestos the hidden killer campaign enters into its fifth month. The campaign was set up by the National Health and Safety Executive to warn people of the dangers of the substance. According to the British Lung Foundation, 20 tradesmen per week are said to die from exposure to asbestos.

Exposure to asbestos kills plumber

A man from the Crawley area who worked as a plumber for 25 years has died from lung cancer following exposure to asbestos.

Ron Rose, who worked for G W Hitchcock Ltd from 1948 to 1971, was diagnosed in 2007 after visiting the doctor after complaining of back pain. Mr Rose had to stop caring for his sick wife as a result of the mesothelioma brought on by the exposure.

The coroner that examined Mr Rose’s body said: "He became exposed to asbestos during one particular project working at a petrol station. Workers were sawing sheets of material, thought to contain asbestos, in a closed area.

Following on from recent research into the ignorance of tradesmen over the dangers of asbestos, a new campaign has been set up by the National Health and Safety Executive to warn people of its dangers.

The Asbestos the hidden killer campaign is looking to particularly target the North West where four of its local authorities are in the top 20 for male and female asbestos related deaths.

The problem was recently highlighted by research by the British Lung Foundation and it revealed that 20 tradesmen die every week as a result of breathing in asbestos fibres during the course of their work.

Tradesmen ignorant over asbestos

Builders, gasfitters and other tradesmen have an “alarming” ignorance of the risks posed by asbestos, with 20 dying each week, a report revealed today.

The British Lung Foundation said a survey of 400 workers showed that only one in eight knew that exposure to asbestos could be fatal.

One in 10 of those questioned revealed they had been pressured to continue working even if they suspected that asbestos was present, while one in four mistakenly assumed that some levels of asbestos were safe.
